General therapy

“Therapy” is translated from the ancient Greek as “treatment process, medical care”. Thus, the general therapy comprises all actions performed by a doctor to improve a patient’s condition: relieve disease symptoms, normalize functioning of vital organs and systems, support rehabilitation. A general practitioner must have a broad knowledge in medicine, be aware of symptoms inherent in various diseases, possess a wide range of practical skills in health care area.

When it is necessary to seek a general practitioner’s help

In most cases people seek a general practitioner’s help when they have fever, feel pain in various body parts, cough and have labored breathing or abrupt changes of arterial blood pressure, experience abnormal skin rash, severe itching, fatigue and dizziness, dramatic weight loss, etc. In such events general practice is intended to collect all information as quickly as possible to make a correct diagnosis. When necessary doctors specializing in particular area join a general practitioner to help a patient to cope with a disease.

Treatment methods used in general therapy:

The following traditional treatment methods are commonly used in general therapy:

  • chemical;
  • biological;
  • physical.

The chemical and biological methods are closely related as they both involve treatment using medicines. They include chemically synthesized medications (pharmacology), medicinal herbs (phytotherapy), essential oil (aromatherapy), pelotherapy and mineral waters, hydrotherapy, immunotherapy using vitamins and Immunomodulators. Chemotherapy used for oncological diseases treatment also belongs here.

Physical methods involve patient treatment using special equipment and techniques. This group of treatment methods comprises massage, therapeutic exercises, physiotherapy (ultrahigh therapy, electrophoresis, radiotherapy, low-level laser therapy, magnetic resonance therapy, etc.), special breathing techniques, diets, meditation.

Despite the fact that surgery is a separate medicine specialty it can make a part of general therapy sometimes. A general practitioner must use it in particular cases when the recovery of a patient is impossible without a surgical procedure.
