Hair and eyebrow transplant

Eyebrow transplant surgery allows restoring eyebrows after total loss and forming absolutely new eyebrows by transplanting donor hair follicles. Hair transplant procedure is a process of transfer and implantation of the patient’s own or donor hair follicles. In most cases the hair from the occipital or temporal region are used as these regions are least prone to hair loss (alopecia).

Some information about hair and eyebrow transplant procedure:

Hair and eyebrow transplant techniques are similar. This procedure is required when a patient has experienced full eyebrows or hair loss (diffuse alopecia) due to diseases or other irritative factors (severe stresses, faulty nutrition). Other hair loss causes include injuries, chemotherapy, incorrect cosmetic procedures, etc. Sometimes transplant is advised for aesthetic reasons to make eyebrows more thick.

The important condition for successful surgery is the availability of healthy donor hair follicles. Prior to the hair transplant procedure it is also crucial to make sure all causes of hair loss have been eliminated. In the course of surgery special grafts are formed each containing 1 to 4 hairs. 50 to 400 of such grafts can be required for surgery. For eyebrow transplant the hair is extracted from the nape of the neck or from the area behind the ears as they are more thick there. For the transplant only the follicles with a single hair are selected.

Preparation to hair and eyebrow transplant surgery:

Prior to a transplant surgery the patient examination takes place including general and biochemical analyses of blood and urine, electrocardiography, X-ray examination, determination of the Rh factor and blood clotting ability. Patient’s own hair follicles are inspected. If they do not meet the requirements of the procedure a decision is made to use the donor ones.

Surgery/procedure duration: 4 hours

Anesthesia: local anesthesia

Postoperative period:

After completion of surgery a sterile bandage is applied to the affected area. It prevents swelling and protects from infections. This bandage is removed in 2 or 3 days upon surgery. If a transplant has been carried out using strip method (taking of skin strips with hair follicles) the stitches are removed from the hear extraction regions 2 weeks after surgery. After a transplantation almost no discomfort is felt so a patient has no need to take painkillers. A patient can resume his or her regular work and rest schedule in one week.

If a hair transplantation has been carried out using strips the recovery period duration is at least 2 to 3 months. The hair will start growing after this recovery period. If a follicular method has been used during surgery the hair growth starts immediately. The average rejection rate is low in both cases and equals to about 10%. It is important to understand that the hair growth rate is not high – approximately 1 cm per month. So it will be possible to evaluate the true results only in 3 or 4 months. The implanted hair will become thicker gradually making the eyebrows thick as well.

For successful hair transplantation it is necessary to be careful during the first days after it and avoid any injuries. If you feel itching or burning at an operated region it is important to refrain from scratching it. Scratching can result in the loss of newly transplanted hair.

A definite angle of hair growth is achieved using special gels. So, it will correspond to the natural eyebrow growth angle. Too long hairs should be cut with nail scissors. Generally, one surgery is enough to make eyebrows look natural. Sometimes a surgeon can perform additional hair transplant procedures. But this will become possible only in 3 or 4 months after the initial transplantation.
